Man dies in Peshawar police’s custody
PESHAWAR: An inmate died in the lockup of the University Town police station here the other day.
Police identified the inmate as Imranullah, who was brought to the police station by a complainant, Liaqatullah, accusing him of stealing a mobile phone and Rs22,000 from his room which was caught on the CCTV camera.
The official said the police arrested the accused and lodged an FIR against him and put him in the lockup.
The official said at around 7.30am on Tuesday, three other inmates, who were in the same lockup, informed the on-duty guard that the accused was foaming at the mouth and was not breathing.
He said the police staff upon going inside found him dead.
The official said police high-ups were informed about the incident, and a request for judicial enquiry into the incident was made before sessions judge, Peshawar, who had appointed judicial magistrate Abdul Haleem as inquiry officer.
The police official said the body was sent to Khyber Medical College for autopsy, with questions whether cause of death was violence, heart attack or use of narcotics. The magistrate has recorded the statements of three accused, who were present inside the lockup.
The statement of deceased’s father was also recorded who said his son was a heroin-addict and had left home 10 days ago. He did not blame anybody for his death.
